ESP mesh nodes: neighborhood hardware

Why this band exists

The quieter internet is not only software in a browser tab; it is radios and chips on a shelf you can touch. Remade Edge makes ESP-class nodes speak the mesh so cameras, mics, and identity live on devices that never have to phone a cloud broker.

Why now

A party of only laptops dies when the lid closes. Doorbells, shed sensors, and maker boards have to join as peers: same DID grammar, same media path, same refusal of a rented IoT SKU. Kairos and rusty_esp_* are how neighborhood hardware stops being a content pipeline for someone else's campus.

How it fits

Identity on the chip is still Identity. Local AV uses Media codecs. On-device detection is Mind. Sync when awake is Memory. Firmware lockfiles are Trust. Edge is where the constellation touches dirt and copper.

    iroh mesh on ESP32

  • rusty_esp_mid · replaces vendor device IDs

    mID on the chip

  • rusty_esp_audio · replaces cloud mic stacks

    Local audio without phoning home

  • rusty_esp_video · replaces cloud camera stacks

    MJPEG and H.264 on ESP

  • Kairos · replaces FreeRTOS C kernel as sole runtime

    FreeRTOS-class realtime remade in Rust

  • Starfire / Comet · replaces hosted game stream

    Self-hosted GameStream clients

What to build first

  1. An ESP32 peer on rusty_esp_iroh that speaks Janus ALPNs on the mesh
  2. Camera or mic paths with rusty_esp_video / rusty_esp_audio that stay on-LAN
  3. Self-hosted play with Starfire instead of a rented GameStream region
